PROGRAMS Providing programs for parents and families is part of the PTA’s mission. Elementary school children love to bring their parents to their school, and it’s important for parents of children of any age to visit their child’s school from time to time in order to stay in their child’s “world”. Keeping this in mind, use programs not only as a way to get parents into the school building and to promote parenting skills, but also as a way of developing a more close-knit community and of strengthening families. And, as always, when parents are present, you have an opportunity to recruit volunteers and/or new members! Most programs cost nothing but time, which makes programs possible for even a PTA with the most modest budget. If hosting programs in the school is not possible for your PTA, parenting information can be sent home to parents by way of articles in a newsletter. When selecting a project for which to allocate funds, ask these questions: • Will it supplement the curriculum? • Will it benefit all students in the school? • Will it enhance the students’ education? Some of the PTA’s objects and goals pertaining to parenting are: •To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their child. •To raise the standards of home life. •To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation. •To promote the welfare of children and youth in the home, the school community, and the place of worship. Keep those goals in mind when deciding which programs your PTA will sponsor. Look for programs that will develop leadership and parenting skills, promote parental involvement and education, teach child health and safety, and sponsor educational programs that will enhance students’ education. Good publicity is vital to the success of any program. Publicize the event in a newsletter or in fliers that are sent home to parents. Contact local newspapers and television and radio stations. Put the event information on your school marquee or on street banners. Get the word out! Tip: Food usually draws people to an event. Arrange for a hospitality table with light snacks and beverages, organize a potluck dinner, or set up food for sale at the time of your program. Don’t forget to include in your publicity the fact that food will be available at the event! Remember the three Fs for successFood, Families, and Fun!
